Over the past decade, Flanders workers have seen a significant change in their work schedules. According to Statistics Flanders, the most popular form of flexible working arrangement in 2023 is working from home, with four out of ten workers doing so at least occasionally. This is almost double the percentage from 2013.

However, this trend has not been uniform across all types of flexible work. While Saturday work was once the most common form of flexible work in Flanders, with over 20% of workers doing it at least twice a month in 2013, this percentage has decreased slightly to 20.8% by 2023. On the other hand, shift work has seen a significant increase since 2013, with the proportion of workers engaging in it rising from 8% to 13.9%.

Moreover, statistics show that men are more likely than women to work in the evenings and at night and tend to work shifts more frequently. However, on weekends, the proportion of men and women working is relatively equal, with women slightly more likely to work from home.

Overall, these changes reflect a shift in the types of flexible work arrangements that workers in Flanders are engaging in. While working from home has become increasingly popular, other forms of atypical working time arrangements are also on the rise.
