In New York state, a multi-county suicide prevention campaign has been launched in the Finger Lakes region. Several health departments have come together to address the upward trend in suicide deaths in the area. Counties such as Chemung, Livingston, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates are participating in this initiative.

The campaign’s focus is on populations that have a higher-than-average risk of suicide, including first responders, older adults, men, and veterans. The goal is to create a safer and more supportive environment for individuals facing mental health challenges through collective action and mental health advocacy.

Michele Foster, the executive director of the Pivital Public Health Partnership, stated, “We are proud to launch this collaborative effort with our local health departments and believe we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most at risk.” The campaign aims to raise awareness for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, providing immediate access to trained professionals for those in need. Educational materials will also be available online and in print to support the campaign’s efforts.
