On a somber day in June of 2023, Vaughn Parker Jr., a beloved member of the community, tragically took his own life. In response to this tragic event, Jalyn Holmes, his stepson and a player for the New York Jets, organized a Community Day event at Lake Taylor High School’s football stadium in Norfolk, Virginia. The event aimed to raise awareness for men’s mental health and honor Parker’s memory.

The Community Day event was a lively affair with activities such as bounce houses, food trucks and DJs playing music to keep attendees entertained. But it wasn’t all fun and games; participants also took part in a memorial walk towards the end of the event to pay their respects to Parker. According to Holmes, this walk symbolized standing for what Parker believed in – unity within the community.

Throughout the event, Holmes emphasized the phrase “Do Like Wise,” a term that Parker often used. This phrase signifies treating others with love and kindness by loving yourself first. Holmes and his mother Tasha Holmes Parker started a non-profit organization named Vaughn’s Way to promote awareness for men’s mental health and continue their son’s legacy.

Local resources are readily available for those seeking support or assistance in the Hampton Roads area. Community Services Boards in various cities provide services while the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services offers additional resources. In times of crisis, individuals can reach out for help by calling or texting 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The National Alliance on Mental Illness also provides programs, events, presentations and support groups for those in need. If urgent support is required, individuals can call the Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-TALK.

The Community Day event was an emotional but uplifting occasion that brought people together to honor Vaughn Parker Jr.’s memory while raising awareness for men’s mental health. Through events like these and organizations like Vaughn’s Way, we can continue to promote open dialogue about mental health issues and create a more supportive community for those who need it most.
