In 2011, World Hunger Day was established to raise awareness about the global food crisis. Feeding America reports that 44 million people in the United States are struggling with hunger, including over 13 million children. The Maryland Food Bank states that 1 in 3 Maryland residents are experiencing food insecurity.

Jean Sierys, the Regional Director for The Society of St. Andrew on Delmarva, is an organization dedicated to combating hunger in the area. They approach the issue differently than many other organizations by focusing on preventing food waste and providing nutritious food to those in need within the community. Sierys explains that a significant amount of fresh produce goes to waste in the United States while many community members lack access to healthy food due to financial constraints or the absence of full-service grocery stores nearby.

The disconnect between perception and reality is a common issue that Sierys emphasizes. Many people may assume that hardworking individuals have everything they need, but this is not always the case. World Hunger Day serves as an opportunity for people to learn about the hunger crisis in their community and take action to help address it.

The Society of St. Andrew partners with local farmers to reduce food waste and ensure that nutritious food is available to individuals in need throughout the area. Their efforts aim not only to address the issue of hunger but also promote a more sustainable and equitable food system.
