Despite being widely recognized, feminism is not universally accepted. According to a survey conducted by Ipsos in 31 mostly high-income countries, only 39 percent of respondents identified as feminists. On average, 51 percent of respondents disagreed with calling themselves feminists. Only two countries, India and Spain, had a majority of respondents who identified as feminists, even though both countries have mixed records on gender rights. When looking at responses from women specifically, only seven countries had a majority of self-identified feminists, indicating a significant gender gap in perceptions of feminism.

In Japan, the country with the lowest percentage of self-identified feminists, only 15 percent of both men and women agreed with the label. A majority of 61 percent of respondents disagreed with being called feminists, reflecting negative associations with the term in the country. Similar trends were observed in South Korea, the second-lowest ranked country, where issues related to women’s rights and anti-feminist sentiments have been highlighted. Challenges to traditional gender roles and the rise of incel culture have further complicated perceptions of feminism in these countries.

The backlash against feminism in East Asia can also be attributed to economic hardships and issues related to gender imbalance. Policies promoting gender equality have faced opposition, particularly among young men who feel marginalized in the workforce and dating scene. The preference for sons in the past has led to a disproportionate number of men in these societies, further exacerbating tensions and frustrations. Online spaces have become breeding grounds for anti-feminist sentiments and incel culture, reflecting deeper societal challenges related to gender and equality.

In conclusion, despite its widespread recognition as a concept that advocates for gender equality and women’s rights
