Luke Bell, a content creator and Sony ambassador specializing in reviewing drones and cameras on YouTube and Instagram, teamed up with his father Mike, an architect known for designing the Mbombela Stadium where the 2010 FIFA World Cup was held, to create the world’s fastest drone. The duo from South Africa recently set a new record with an average top speed of 298.47 mph.

The Bells enlisted the help of aerothermal engineer Chris Rosser to assist in controlling the drone. To secure the record, they flew the drone in two runs in opposite directions to demonstrate its ability to navigate both tailwinds and headwinds. The drone clocked an actual top speed of 317 mph and an average of 298.47 mph during these runs.

Developing this high-speed drone took several months, during which they faced and troubleshooted various problems such as electrical fires caused by overheating wires and batteries. The quadcopter Peregreen 2 is made of 3D-printed carbon fiber, powered by batteries, and controlled remotely. This new model surpasses their earlier model that reached speeds of 247 mph according to Guinness World Records.
