On October 7, three members of the Kalderon family were kidnapped by Hamas near the Gaza Strip. Two French citizens, Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi, are still presumed to be held by Hamas. The Israeli army announced the death of Orion Hernandez-Radoux, who was one of three French hostages still in captivity after being kidnapped on October 7 during the assault on the Tribe of Nova festival. In reaction to this news, Emmanuel Macron sent his condolences to the family and loved ones of Orion Hernandez, and reaffirmed France’s commitment to the release of all hostages.

Sahar and Erez were released in November, but Ofer remained in captivity. Ohad Yahalomi was also taken by Hamas along with his son Eitan. Eitan was released in November after 52 days, but Ohad’s whereabouts remain unknown. Videos released by Hamas showed Ohad alive on January 19, but there have been no recent updates from his family.

The Israeli army announced the recovery of three hostages’ bodies from the Gaza Strip following the attack by Hamas on October 7. More than 1,100 people were killed on the Israeli side, including many civilians, during the conflict. There are still 121 hostages detained in Gaza, of whom 37 are deceased per the Israeli army. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation that has resulted in the deaths of thousands in Gaza.
