The facial recognition software works by scanning photos of individuals of interest and comparing them to a database. When a match is found, the security team is alerted, initiating an investigation. However, it’s important to note that this technology does not store or track information on individuals who are not of interest.
Will Bernhjelm, vice president of security at the Mall of America, highlighted the importance of this cutting-edge technology in identifying potential threats and ensuring the safety of the mall and its guests. Security personnel at the mall have undergone training in traditional facial recognition techniques to accurately compare facial features and determine if there’s a software alert match. Following a manual review, mall officers will approach any potential person of interest and follow standard security protocols.
Facial recognition technology has faced criticism for inaccuracies and biases, with higher misidentification rates among people of color. However, Corsight AI, the vendor responsible for the mall’s facial recognition software, has undergone testing by reputable organizations such as NIST and DHS, demonstrating its accuracy and reliability.
Despite concerns about potential misidentification and privacy issues, the Mall of America maintains that this technology will greatly enhance security measures and ensure a safe environment for all visitors.
