In an effort to create more culturally and linguistically relevant artificial intelligence technology, Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, is developing AI specifically for Europe. The company announced on Monday that it will train its large language models using content shared publicly on platforms like Instagram and Facebook by people in the European Union.
Last month, Meta announced that it would begin notifying Facebook and Instagram users in Europe and the United Kingdom about how public information shared on Meta’s services is used to develop and enhance AI technology. In an interview with Reuters in September, Meta’s top policy executive stated that the company used public Facebook and Instagram posts to train parts of its new Meta AI virtual assistant. However, private posts shared only with family and friends were excluded to protect consumer privacy.
This initiative by Meta Platforms aims to improve the user experience and better serve their diverse European audience by creating AI technology tailored to reflect the linguistic, geographic, and cultural references of European users.
