A jury in a Philadelphia court has ruled in favor of former employee Paul Gill, ordering US oil and gas giant ExxonMobil to pay $725 million in damages for his cancer diagnosis. Gill, 67, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2019 and claims that his cancer was caused during his work as a mechanic at an ExxonMobil gas station from 1975 to 1980, where he handled kerosene and solvents without protection. The jury found that the company failed to warn him about the cancer risks associated with benzene exposure.

Following a week-long trial, ten of the twelve jurors found in favor of Gill, ruling in his favor on Thursday. The decision was made public on Friday, with ExxonMobil ordered to pay Gill $725 million in damages and an additional $500,000 to his wife. In response, ExxonMobil stated that it plans to appeal the verdict, calling it irrational and expressing confidence that the judgment will be overturned.
