Mississippi State University is hosting its first-ever Youth Soil Science Field Day at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona on June 21. The half-day event is designed for students between the ages of 8 and 12 who have an interest in soil science.

Amee Bumguardner, an assistant professor of agronomy at MSU, is coordinating this event sponsored by the MSU Extension Service. The program aims to introduce young people to various aspects of soil science that they may not have encountered in school. The activities and sessions are designed to engage students and provide them with hands-on experiences.

Mississippi State University is excited to host its first Youth Soil Science Field Day at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona on June 21. This half-day event is perfect for students between the ages of 8 and 12 who have a passion for soil science.

The event is being coordinated by Amee Bumguardner, an assistant professor of agronomy at MSU, who has been instrumental in making this exciting opportunity happen. This event is sponsored by the MSU Extension Service, which aims to provide young people with a deeper understanding of soil science beyond what they may learn in school.

During the field day, participants will have the chance to interact with MSU scientists and learn about how soil provides nutrients to plants, how it’s formed, and how livestock impact it. Hands-on activities like painting with soil and learning how to classify soil characteristics will be available for students to participate in.

There’s no cost to attend this event, but registration must be completed by June 19th. Parents or caregivers can stay with their children during the event or pick them up when it concludes. The field day will begin with registration at 8:30 am and end at 11:30 am.
