On Sunday, July 7, 2024, the Central Colorado Humanists will host a fascinating Sunday Science program featuring a discussion on “Cultural Anthropology in Pacific Coastal Mexico” presented by Dr. Russ McGoodwin. Dr. McGoodwin is a renowned cultural anthropologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado-Boulder who has spent decades studying fishing communities, fisheries-management policies and marine ecosystems in small, impoverished rural villages on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

During his fieldwork, Dr. McGoodwin relied on key informants and close friends in the village to gain insights into the social and economic lives of the villagers through both quantitative and qualitative methods. He will share his experiences and discuss how state and regional policies emphasizing the export of marine resources have contributed to ongoing poverty and degradation of marine ecosystems in the region. With extensive experience working in fishing communities around the world and holding appointments at prestigious institutions, Dr. McGoodwin has focused on developing fisheries-management policies that promote well-being and food security of small-scale fishing communities globally.

The Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science programs on the first Sunday of each month at the Scout Hut in Salida. The program begins at 10:00 a.m., with doors opening at 9:30 a.m., and admission is free for all attendees. This presentation aims to be accessible to both scientists and non-scientists alike, so don’t miss out on this intriguing discussion!
