On Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, camels will be making a return to the Alamo for World Camel Day. This event is organized by the Texas Camel Corps, founded in 1997 by Doug Baum. The group regularly hosts historic reenactments with live camels at schools, museums, libraries, and historical sites like the Alamo.

During this weekend’s event, visitors will have the chance to see how camels were used in 19th-century America and learn about their unique history in the U.S. Army during the 1850s. According to the Alamo’s website, camels were employed at the church grounds as an alternative to horses and mules due to their ability to travel in extreme heat with minimal water. However, this experiment with camels was short-lived, and the U.S. Army ultimately decided not to continue using them after the trial period.

The event is free to attend and no tickets are required. Visitors can see the camels in the Alamo garden during the event, which is a unique opportunity to learn more about this fascinating chapter in American history. The Alamo is located at 300 Alamo Plaza in San Antonio.
