The sun-soaked land of Portugal has long been a popular travel destination, attracting tourists with its rich culture and affordability. However, most visitors tend to stick to the same old routes, such as Lisbon and the Algarve, during peak season. To change this trend and promote wellness-focused travel, Portugal is embarking on an ambitious initiative known as the ‘Palmilhar Portugal’ project.

The project aims to create a 3,000 km trail that will be the longest circular walking route in the world. It is designed to spread tourism throughout underdeveloped areas outside of peak season and appeal to a wide range of travelers. The route will be suitable for walkers and cyclists, with accessibility for those with limited mobility.

The first section of the trail is set to open in Alenquer, just north of Lisbon, at the end of July. It will eventually pass through 90-100 districts across the country, including vineyards, towns, and coastal areas. Walkers will have access to an app and a physical passport for stamping along the way to document their journey.

Additional sections of the trail are expected to open in Alentejo, central Portugal, and Tras-Os-Montes region in the coming months. By year’s end, 15 routes are expected to be open across the country. This new initiative offers travelers an opportunity to explore Portugal beyond popular tourist spots and experience its diverse landscapes and cultures firsthand.
