The state of Florida has recently taken a step towards making home health care services more accessible for Medicaid patients. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that expands the ability of advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants to order medically necessary home health care services for those on Medicaid. This change brings Medicaid patients in line with federal and private insurers, ensuring that they have easier access to healthcare services.
The Affordable Care Act already allows advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants to order home services for patients with private insurance or Medicare. However, Medicaid patients often face challenges in accessing healthcare services. This new law aims to open doors for them and make healthcare more accessible to this vulnerable population.
Starting on July 1, 2024, healthcare services offered in the home may include doctor care, nursing care, physical, occupational, respiratory, or speech therapy, home health aide services, medical social services, and homemaker/companion services. This will help minimize unnecessary trips to the doctor’s office and make it easier for patients to receive the care they need in the comfort of their own homes.
The new law is just one part of a series of efforts by the state legislature to expand healthcare access. The Live Healthy Act provides funding for providers to invest in recruiting and telehealth technology, further enhancing the availability of healthcare services.
