In response to the recent discovery of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile fever virus near Ben Gurion International Airport, the Ministry of Environment has instructed the Airports Authority to expand its monitoring system for controlling mosquito breeding grounds in the area. The ministry has mobilized dedicated pest control teams to identify breeding sites and collect mosquitoes for analysis. If testing confirms the presence of West Nile fever virus, local authorities are notified to take immediate action to eliminate the source of infected mosquitoes.

In the past, infected mosquitoes were found in Ramat Gan thanks to the diligent work of specialists. To reduce the risk of contracting West Nile fever, the Ministry of Environment and Health have issued a series of guidelines for the public. These include cleaning public sewers, draining standing water sources that serve as mosquito habitats, and removing or covering containers that can collect water.

To further protect against mosquito bites, individuals are advised to use insect repellent, install mosquito-repelling accessories in living spaces, and limit exposed skin by wearing long, light-colored clothing. Fans should be used indoors and outdoors to deter mosquitoes, and insect screens should be installed on windows and doors.

Additionally, the Ministry of Environment urges the public to report any areas where mosquito breeding hazards are present to local authorities. This includes notifying authorities about sewer breaks, standing water or any other potential mosquito breeding sites. By working together to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and take preventive measures against mosquito bites, we can significantly reduce the spread of West Nile fever.

It is important for everyone in Israel to remain vigilant and follow these guidelines from health officials to protect themselves from West Nile fever outbreaks.
