Southampton manager Russell Martin is on the verge of agreeing to a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2027. After leading the team back to the Premier League last season following his arrival from Swansea City, Martin is set to be rewarded with a one-year extension to the deal he initially signed last summer.

The former Norwich defender signed a three-year contract when he joined Southampton and guided the team to a club-record 25-match unbeaten run, finishing fourth in the Championship. The team secured a return to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United 1-0 in the play-off final, bouncing back from their relegation in May 2023.

Since the departure of former director of football Jason Wilcox to Manchester United, Martin has been actively involved in Southampton’s summer recruitment efforts. The team is currently in talks to bring midfielder Flynn Downes back to St Mary’s after his successful loan spell with the team last season. Southampton is hoping to secure Downes from West Ham United in a swap deal that would see defender Kyle Walker-Peters move in the opposite direction.
