Examiner Media’s publisher, Adam Stone, was honored with a Merit Award for Health and Science Reporting at the Silurians Press Club’s 79th Annual Journalism Awards. The event took place on June 12 at the National Arts Club in Manhattan, where Stone was pictured alongside Silurians Press Club President Joe Berger.

The top two winners of the evening were The New York Times and Newsday, both receiving a President’s Choice Award, the highest honor in this year’s “Excellence in Journalism” awards. In the Health and Science Reporting category, The Record/northjersey.com – USA Today Network won the top prize for a piece on aging in New Jersey.

Examiner Media received recognition for its investigative piece titled “Your Care Has Been Outsourced” during the ceremony. This award adds to Stone and Examiner Media’s recent success at the New York Press Association (NYPA) Better Newspaper Contest in April. They took home honors in six categories, including first place for best Freedom of Information journalism project and third place in the Writer of the Year category. Berger, who wrote a piece for The New York Times in 2007 about The Examiner’s launch, also has ties to the winning team.

Stone was among several journalists recognized for their outstanding work at this year’s event. Other winners included reporter Megan Smith from Newsday who won a Merit Award for her investigation on nursing homes and reporter Arian Smith from USA Today Network who won a Merit Award for his reporting on mental health issues in schools.
