It is reported by the PA news agency that Wayne Rooney, the former England captain, is on the verge of making a return to management with Sky Bet Championship club Plymouth. According to sources, Rooney and the club have reached an agreement on terms and he is expected to sign a three-year deal over the weekend.

During his time at Everton’s Academy, Rooney emerged as a talented teenager and has a history with Plymouth’s director of football Neil Dewsnip. Rooney’s last managerial stint was at Birmingham where he was in charge for just 15 games before being dismissed in January. During his tenure at Birmingham, he only managed to secure two victories. Before this, Rooney gained some experience in management at Derby before heading to the United States to manage MLS team DC United.

Plymouth made a managerial change in April when they parted ways with Ian Foster just three months after he took over from Steven Schumacher who left for Stoke. At the time of Foster’s departure, Plymouth was just one place and a single point above the relegation zone. However, under the leadership of Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell, Plymouth managed to secure their safety with three wins in their last six games, including a 1-0 victory over Hull on the final day of the season.
