The European Union is discussing potential sanctions against Israel after it failed to comply with an International Court of Justice ruling that ordered it to stop its military operations in Rafah, as reported by local media. Ireland’s foreign minister, Michael Martin, spoke about the possibility of sanctions during a meeting of EU foreign ministers. He stated that if Israel continued to ignore the court’s order, sanctions could be considered and that Ireland would support such an approach.

The Israeli military offensive in Rafah resulted in at least 45 deaths and nearly 250 injuries, targeting a camp for displaced people and houses in the southern Gaza city. The UNRWA logistics base in Tal al-Sultan was also hit by Israeli airstrikes. The ICJ ordered Israel to halt its military campaign in Rafah, open the Rafah crossing, and allow access to international fact-finding missions after thousands of Palestinians died and widespread destruction occurred in Gaza, leaving many civilians homeless and at risk of famine.
