In a tense EURO 2024 group stage finale match between Hungary and Scotland in Germany, a brutal three-man collision occurred on the pitch. The incident happened in the 69th minute when Hungary forward Barnabas Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn’s punch attempt while challenging for a cross. Scottish fullback Anthony Ralston was also affected by the collision.

Varga lay in distress on the ground and was immediately called for medical help by his teammates. The latest update from Hungary’s federation stated that Varga was ‘stable’ in a hospital in Stuttgart, having suffered several facial fractures and a concussion. It was reported that Varga would likely need surgery for his injuries. Head coach Marco Rossi indicated that Varga would not be able to continue in the competition if Hungary advanced.

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was visibly upset as Varga was treated on the pitch, with a tent erected around him before being stretchered off. Despite the injury, Szoboszlai held up Varga’s jersey during his goal celebration as tribute to his injured teammate.

The match remained scoreless until Hungary’s Kevin Csoboth scored in the 100th minute to win 1-0. This victory gave Hungary a chance to qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-place teams.

Varga, a key player for Ferencvaros, faced a difficult recovery process following the collision on the pitch. However, with support from his teammates and medical professionals, he will work towards making a full recovery and returning to action soon.
