The global landscape is shifting towards strategic rivalry between China and the advanced industrial economies of the West, putting Europe at a crossroads. European leaders are focused on the principle of “de-risking” in their interactions with China, especially regarding vital green technologies on which Europe heavily relies. However, policymakers face challenges in balancing economic, security, and climate concerns, as well as considering the impacts of de-risking policies on third countries.
During an informal discussion at our Berlin office, Janka Oertel, Director of the Asia Programme & Senior Policy Fellow at ECFR, and Alexander Lipke, Programme Coordinator of the Asia Programme at ECFR, will explore various de-risking pathways in Europe with a focus on their effects on climate priorities and implications for third countries.
