German Economics Minister Robert Habeck expressed his excitement for Euro 2024 being hosted in Germany, calling it a moment for the nation to “reward” itself after facing significant challenges over the past four years. Despite ongoing difficulties such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the energy and economic crisis due to the Russian war against Ukraine, and other challenges that the country has had to navigate, Habeck emphasized that Germany has managed to tackle some of its biggest obstacles in the last two years. He hopes that the tournament will bring joy to the country and its people, even if it only results in a slight increase in economic growth.

Habeck also addressed a controversial survey that revealed that one in five Germans would prefer to see more white players in the Germany national team. He condemned such sentiments as racist, noting that players who represent their country should not face discrimination based on their skin color. The survey was conducted in response to racist comments faced by the national team during the filming of a documentary about unity, justice, and diversity. Habeck’s comments underscored the importance of inclusivity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their ethnic background.
