The European Union is currently seeking a comprehensive solution for the top jobs, with a focus on ensuring adequate representation for Eastern Europe. Ursula von der Leyen has been expected to retain her position as Commission President, with support from Germany, France and Italy.
However, there have been no significant rival candidates emerging. Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa is aiming for the position of President of the Council of Heads of State and Government, while Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is a candidate for head of the foreign service. The renewal of the mandate for President of the Parliament, held by Roberta Metsola, is largely uncontested.
These appointments could create a balanced regional and party political distribution among the top positions in the EU. While surprises are always possible, there is a strong interest in quickly establishing the new leadership to address ongoing challenges and uncertainties. A meeting of all member states’ leaders is scheduled for Monday evening in Brussels where further decisions may be made. Von der Leyen could potentially be confirmed by the European Parliament as early as July 18th.
