The EU Commission has announced that punitive tariffs will be imposed in July, affecting Tesla’s Chinese production. Negotiations are ongoing between the EU Commission and Tesla regarding the specific size of the duty, which is still being determined. Tesla has stated that the price of the Model 3 will increase in early July due to these tariffs, but customers have the option to avoid the price increase by taking delivery of their new car before the end of June.

On Wednesday, the EU implemented punitive tariffs on cars produced in China, impacting popular car models in Finland, including Tesla’s Model 3. The duties range from 17-38 percent and are a response to the Chinese government’s support of its car industry, which is seen as a violation of international trade rules. Negotiations are ongoing between the EU Commission and Tesla regarding the size of the duty.

The tariffs will also affect cars that have already been ordered but not yet delivered. Popular electric car models, such as Volvo’s EX30 and cars from BYD and SAIC, will be subject to the duties. Customers in Finland, who have been favoring electric vehicles, will likely feel the impact of these tariffs. Deliveries of cars ordered after the effective date of the duties will incur additional penalty duties on top of the existing import tariffs.
