Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck has stated that the European Union is open to discussing tariffs on Chinese exports during his visit to China. Habeck emphasized the importance of dialogue and negotiations with Chinese partners, and hopes that this message was well received. This marks the first time a senior European official has visited since the EU proposed imposing heavy duties on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles to address concerns about subsidies.
After meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing, Habeck shared his views in Shanghai. He highlighted that there is a window of opportunity for dialogue between the EU and China until November. Habeck stressed the importance of open markets but also emphasized the need for a level playing field in trade. The EU is currently considering provisional duties that would go into effect by July 4, with a final decision expected by November 2 for potential implementation of definitive duties over the following five years.
