The upcoming college football season will see the return of games on TV, with a new-look North Carolina team set to take on Minnesota to open the season. Despite the departure of key players like quarterback Drake Maye, linebacker Cedric Gray, and wide receiver Tez Walker, who are now in the NFL, UNC still has some returning talent. However, there are still many unanswered questions about the team.

In their first Football Power Index rankings for the 2024 season, ESPN placed UNC just above the middle of the pack in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The rankings have UNC ranked No. 7 in the ACC with a 4.7 rating, which puts them at No. 42 overall in college football. The FPI projects UNC to have a 7.5-4.6 overall record, with an 83.3 percent chance of reaching six wins. They also have a 4.3 percent chance of winning the ACC and an 8 percent chance of making the College Football Playoff.

While it’s still early to predict where UNC will finish the season, they will face some tough opponents, including road games against Florida State and a home game against NC State. As always, it is interesting to see how other media outlets rank them before the season begins.
