Governor Kathy Hochul has recently announced that the state Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Law Enforcement Technology program has awarded grants to several law enforcement agencies in Cayuga County, including the Auburn Police Department. The grant will provide the department with $122,500 to purchase new equipment and upgrade existing technology.

The Auburn Police Chief James Slayton notified city councilors about the grant, stating that the funds would be used to add more cameras to the city’s entrances and exits. This significant grant will benefit the citizens of Auburn by enhancing public safety in the community.

Other Cayuga County agencies, such as the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and Weedsport Police Department, have also received grants through the program. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office will receive $117,526, and the Weedsport Police Department will be awarded $95,000. These funds can be used by police departments and sheriffs’ offices to invest in computer-aided dispatch systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and gunshot detection devices.

More than half of the funding will be used to purchase license plate readers, body-worn cameras, patrol vehicle equipment, and camera systems. Overall, these grants demonstrate Governor Hochul’s commitment to public safety by prioritizing investments in the latest technology and equipment for law enforcement agencies to secure the future of the state.
