In Cota, Colombia, a white dome houses a recreated jungle where two rescued harpy eagles are being cared for. Monogamous by nature, their caretakers at Bioparque La Reserva hope that they will form a bond and successfully raise a baby to help preserve this endangered species. The male and female eagles were recently introduced to each other after being separated by a metal fence for two years, and they appear to be getting along well.

The female eagle has an impressive gray crest but still has pellets in her body from previous injuries sustained while living in the wild. The male is smaller in size and has an immobile left wing that was unable to be healed by veterinarians. Despite their physical limitations, the caretakers are optimistic that the eagles will successfully breed in captivity and contribute to the conservation of their species.

Harpy eagles, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, are vulnerable with a declining population worldwide. In Colombia, they face threats from hunting and deforestation, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival. The pair at Bioparque La Reserva is closely monitored as part of an effort to establish a successful breeding program.

The couple’s calm behavior and compatibility give hope to their caretakers that they will successfully breed. With security cameras and careful management, they are given the opportunity to mate and potentially raise offspring. The conservation efforts for harpy eagles in Colombia are vital for their future survival amid ongoing threats from human activities and habitat destruction.

Despite these challenges, the harpy eagles at Bioparque La Reserva represent a beacon of hope for conservation efforts aimed at preserving this majestic species in Colombia. By providing them with a safe environment where they can thrive, their caretakers work tirelessly towards ensuring a future for these endangered birds.
