Elaine Thompson-Herah, the two-time Olympic 100m and 200m champion, will not be competing in the Jamaican Olympic trials or the Paris Games due to an injury she sustained at the USATF New York City Grand Prix on June 9. Thompson-Herah, who is 31 years old, expressed her disappointment on social media, stating that her health is her top priority and that she is committed to recovering and returning to competition.
Despite missing out on the Jamaican Championships in 2023, Thompson-Herah finished the year as the world’s fifth-fastest woman in the 100m with a time of 10.79 at the Pre Classic. The upcoming Jamaican trials are expected to feature top sprinters like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, both accomplished champions in their own right. Thompson-Herah’s absence will be felt by many, but her focus remains on recovery and a successful return to competition.
Thompson-Herah is one of only two sprinters to win multiple Olympic titles in both the 100m and 200m events. She holds the second-fastest time in history for the 100m and the third-fastest time for the 200m. Her personal best of 21.53 earned her gold at Tokyo Olympics in the women’s long jump event. Despite this setback, Thompson-Herah’s determination and dedication to her sport have made her one of track and field’s most dominant athletes today.
