In El Salvador, the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) recently announced the closure of two political parties, Nosso Tempo and Democratic Change. This was due to a lack of popular support, as per the national Law on Political Parties that states a political party must obtain 50 thousand valid votes to avoid annulment.
In the last presidential and legislative elections, Nosso Tempo received 41,060 votes while Democratic Change received 12,165 votes. Neither party was able to win any seats in the new legislature which is dominated by allies of re-elected president Nayib Bukele.
The Novas Ideias party, led by Bukele, received 2.2 million votes and secured 54 out of the 60 deputies along with their allies. The right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena) and VAMOS also won seats in the Assembly while the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) did not secure any seats.
Andy Failer, the president of Nosso Tempo expressed disappointment on social media regarding the electoral decision to cancel his party. He called it an “unfortunate resolution.”
