A mural located at the Snowmass Mall depicts the skeletons of animals that were discovered during a 2010 excavation at Ziegler Reservoir. On Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m., scientists who were part of the dig will be hosting a lecture with ice age experts to discuss the significant prehistoric discovery in Snowmass.

The lecture will take place at the Snowmass Chapel and feature speakers such as Chief Science Officer for National Geographic Ian Miller, lead paleobotanist of the 2010 dig Gussie Maccracken, Assistant Curator of Paleobotany for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and an intern who participated in the 2010 dig, David Heil, who currently serves as the president of the Aspen Science Center.

During the lecture, the scientists will discuss the excavation that uncovered thousands of ice age fossils. From the initial discovery of a prehistoric mammoth tusk by a bulldozer, hundreds of scientists and local volunteers collaborated to unearth a variety of plant and animal fossils from the ice age, including mastodons, mammoths, and giant ground sloths.

Following the lecture on Saturday, June 22 from 2-6 p.m., there will be a community celebration held in Base Village. The event is free and features activities such as an Ice Age Passport Walk for families to explore while learning about discoveries made during
