On Friday night, a group of Ecuadorian police officers broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito and arrested former vice president Jorge Glas. The Mexican government had granted political asylum to Glas after he entered the embassy last December. Several police officers climbed walls and fences of the diplomatic headquarters before arresting Glas, amidst tension between the two governments.

Following the arrest, the Ecuadorian government confirmed that Glas was under the orders of competent authorities and that the Security Block, a unit created by the government to coordinate operations against organized crime, was responsible for his arrest.

The Presidency of the Republic justified the police operation to enter the Mexican embassy in Quito, stating that every embassy serves a diplomatic purpose and that criminals cannot be considered political prisoners. They emphasized respect for national sovereignty and upholding of international legal frameworks.
