The ongoing economic difficulties and subjectivity of people pose a significant threat to food safety, increasing the risk of poisoning incidents. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Director of the Department of Food Safety in Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted the complex nature of this issue, especially during hot weather when bacteria can thrive and cause poisoning cases.

In recent months, several mass poisoning cases have been reported across different provinces and cities in Vietnam. For example, nearly 100 workers in Dong Nai were suspected of being poisoned after dinner, marking the second such case in the province within a month. The Ministry of Health recorded 16 food poisoning cases in the first quarter of the year, with microorganisms and natural toxins identified as the main causes.

However, experts consider these acute poisoning cases less concerning than long-term effects from consuming residues that accumulate in the body. These substances may include growth hormones, heavy metals, pesticides, and food additives that can lead to various diseases over time. The economy, consumption habits, and lack of awareness among people are cited as primary factors contributing to continuous food poisoning incidents.

Improving food safety requires a coordinated approach from multiple agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Ministry of Health. While Ho Chi Minh City has established a dedicated Department of Food Safety department, challenges remain related to insufficient resources and inspection equipment. The city aims to enhance food safety through safe production and supply chains while emphasizing the importance of clean food for public health prevention.

As individuals continue to navigate ongoing food safety concerns, it is crucial for them to become informed consumers by practicing proper food preparation techniques and storage methods. Avoidance of street food from unknown sources is also essential for personal well-being. Seeking medical attention promptly upon experiencing symptoms is critical for safeguarding one’s health.

Collaboration from all sectors is vital for addressing complex challenges associated with ensuring a safe food supply in Vietnam’s ongoing effort towards improving overall health outcomes.
