The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has clarified that they never intended to disrespect the flag of the European Union. In response to a letter from European Commissioner Margaritis Schinas expressing dissatisfaction after an EU flag was banned from the arena during the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, the EBU stated that they will review their flag policy ahead of the next edition of the festival.

The incident occurred when a Romanian individual working for the European liberals was not allowed to bring his EU flag into the hall on Saturday. Dorin Frasineanu shared his frustrations on X, stating that security deemed the flag to be too “political.” Commissioner Schinas, who is responsible for ‘the European way of life,’ promptly responded with a letter to the EBU seeking clarification.

In their response, which was shared on X, the EBU emphasized that they value the EU flag as an important symbol of European unity and solidarity. Despite enforcing a policy that only allows flags from participating countries and the rainbow flag in the hall, they noted that this had been allowed in previous editions of the contest. However, due to security concerns and current global political climate in Malmö, they strictly applied their policy. Now, they plan to revise it moving forward.

Commissioner Schinas expressed satisfaction with the EBU’s response, calling it a “positive response” on X. The EBU aims to host an inclusive event with Eurovision Song Contest but acknowledges logistical challenges associated with organizing such large-scale show. They remain committed to ensuring fairness and inclusivity at future events for all participants and spectators alike.
