Urinary incontinence is a common problem faced by women, characterized by a loss of bladder control, especially during activities that put pressure on the bladder. Dr. Le Phuc Lien, Head of the Female Urology Unit at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City advises people with urinary incontinence to avoid certain foods and drinks that can worsen their symptoms.

To manage this condition effectively, it’s important for individuals to maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, avoid certain foods and drinks, and perform pelvic floor exercises as recommended by their doctor. Some specific foods and drinks that should be avoided include alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, and spirits as they increase fluid in the bladder and stimulate the bladder, making it harder to control urination. Carbonated soft drinks should also be avoided as they contain sugar that increases urine volume and irritates the bladder. Caffeinated drinks like tea and coffee should be reduced to prevent an increase in urination frequency.

Spicy foods can also irritate the bladder mucosa and make urinary incontinence harder to control. Fruits high in citric acid, such as oranges, tangerines, and pineapples can also stimulate the bladder. By avoiding these triggers individuals with urinary incontinence can better manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being. It’s also important to seek medical advice and appropriate treatment for managing this condition effectively.
