Dutch politician Dirk Beljaarts is facing scrutiny over a recent bankruptcy case involving a company he founded during his time at Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), the lobby organization for the Dutch catering sector. The collapse of this company has raised concerns about Beljaarts’ suitability for the role of Minister of Economic Affairs, according to sources who spoke to De Telegraaf.

During his tenure at KHN, Beljaarts was involved in establishing KHN Rekenwerk, an administrative company that was responsible for managing the financial affairs of KHN members. However, after a few years, KHN Rekenwerk went bankrupt, leaving behind significant debts. The curator’s report reveals that the company owes almost 2 million euros, including unpaid taxes and claims from dissatisfied customers and suppliers.

The creditors, including the Tax Authorities, are seeking payment for the outstanding debts, which has raised questions about Beljaarts’ ability to lead the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Critics from the catering sector are concerned about his past involvement in the failed company and its financial mismanagement.

Beljaarts has confirmed the bankruptcy proceedings but has denied any personal liability in the matter. He claims that the details of the case are still being handled by the curator and that neither Geert Wilders nor formateur Richard van Zwol were unaware of the situation. A hearing with Beljaarts is scheduled to take place in the House of Representatives to address these concerns and determine his fitness for the ministerial role.
