Duke Energy has implemented new tools to improve its ability to maintain power or restore it quickly during storm events. The company’s Distribution Grid Control Center, located near downtown Raleigh, is using smart technology to reduce outage durations. This centralized location allows crews to be dispatched promptly anywhere in the state, increasing operational efficiency and resiliency.

Described as “one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the country,” the new center, opened in late 2023, replaces an older facility in downtown Raleigh that served the area for many years. Utilizing “self-healing” technology, Duke Energy can restore power by rerouting it with the click of a button, reducing the impact of outages significantly. According to Jeff Brooks, a spokesperson for Duke Energy, the new technology can decrease outage impacts by up to 75% and restore power in less than a minute. With power being crucial for customers’ security and daily activities, quick restoration is essential to minimize disruptions in work, family time, and productivity.

Despite the central location potentially making Duke Energy more susceptible to physical or cyberattacks, the facility is secured with heavy fencing, and workers monitor the systems daily for any signs of suspicious activity. The new technology is particularly significant as hurricane season officially begins on June 1, with a record-breaking season expected this year.

As the forecast predicts 8 to 13 hurricanes and 4 to 7 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher), Duke Energy’s upgraded infrastructure will play a crucial role in ensuring reliable power supply during severe weather events.
