Jordan Mills from Matanzas and Mackenzie Roy from Spruce Creek were named athlete of the year at the Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards on June 3 at the Ocean Center Arena. The event was supported by Halifax Health. Other boys finalists included Colby Cronk from Flagler Palm Coast and Elijah Walker from Mainland, while other girls finalists included Aurielle Reavis from Atlantic and Kylie Watson from Seabreeze.

Mills, a senior at Matanzas, excelled in three sports during his final year. In the fall, he was a standout defensive back for the Pirates, recording 69 solo tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. In the winter, Mills achieved a perfect 52-0 record in wrestling, winning the Class 2A state championship at 190 pounds despite dislocating his shoulder during the final match. In the spring, he showed his versatility by qualifying for regionals in track and field, excelling in the 400-meter hurdles. Mills was recognized on the All-Area first teams for football and wrestling, as well as on the second team for track and field.

On the other hand, Roy, a junior at Spruce Creek, earned All-Area honors in cross country, soccer, and track and field during the 2023-24 school year. In cross country, Roy placed fourth in Class 4A with a top time of 18:05.5. She also contributed six goals and two assists for Spruce Creek’s girls soccer team from her position in midfield. In track and field, she finished second in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the Class 4A finals. Roy’s impressive performances across multiple sports solidified her status as a top athlete.
