Australia has announced its traveling reserves for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. The tournament will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America in June. Earlier this month, Australia announced a 15-member core squad for the event.
Due to injuries to David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, the team felt the need for additional players in the traveling party. Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short caught the selectors’ eyes due to their impressive performances in domestic cricket leagues.
Fraser-McGurk played exceptionally well for Delhi Capitals during his debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 330 runs in nine matches with an average of 36.66 and a remarkable strike rate of 234.04. Short, on the other hand, was the top run-scorer in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season, scoring 541 runs in 11 matches at an average of 60.11 and a strike rate of 153.25.
Andrew McDonald, Australia coach, praised both players for their form and stated that Fraser-McGurk was a serious consideration for the final 15. Unfortunately, leg spinner Tanveer Sangha missed out on a reserve spot due to a hip flexor injury suffered during training in Brisbane.
Australia will begin its T20 World Cup campaign against Oman on June 6 at Kensington Oval in Barbados. The team is placed in Group B alongside Oman, England, Namibia, and Scotland before they play warm-up matches against Namibia and West Indies on May 29th and May 31st respectively Trinidad.
