The dangers of illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border are numerous, according to Laredo’s Chief Patrol Agent Jesse Munoz. One of the biggest risks for migrants attempting to cross is the treacherous combination of heat and the river. Munoz warns that the seemingly calm river can be deceptive, as those who are not strong swimmers may find themselves in danger of being swept away by the current.
In order to aid in locating migrants who may be struggling in the water or suffering from heat-related illnesses on land, the U.S. Border Patrol utilizes drones equipped with cameras and heat sensors. These drones allow agents to identify individuals in distress and provide assistance before it is too late.
When migrants are unable to reach land and require assistance, search and rescue teams are deployed to recover bodies, evidence, vehicles, or narcotics. It is a reminder for migrants not to trust their lives or the lives of their loved ones to smuggling organizations.
As technology continues to evolve, the use of drones in border security operations is becoming increasingly sophisticated. With drones operating at high altitudes and agents able to locate and assist individuals in distress, the Border Patrol is able to respond more effectively to border crossing incidents than ever before.
