In a recent episode of his show, “The Draymond Green Show,” former Golden State Warriors player Draymond Green expressed his lack of sympathy for former Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams, who was fired after the team’s poor 2023-24 NBA season. Williams had signed a then-record six-year, $78.5 million contract to lead the Pistons, only to be let go after one year.

Green discussed Williams’ firing on his show and questioned whether the team gave him a fair chance to build the team as they initially intended when they signed him to such a long term deal. According to Green, changing the culture of a team takes time and cannot happen overnight. He believes that the Pistons should have given Williams more time to implement his vision for the team before making such a hasty decision.

Despite his criticism of the Pistons, Green acknowledged that Williams’ newly acquired financial security was a positive outcome in an otherwise difficult situation. He congratulated Williams on being able to spend time with his family and receive $65 million over the next five years from the Pistons without having to coach. The situation might be seen as a blessing in disguise for Williams, who can now focus on other aspects of his life.
