Bestselling author and Venice expert Donna Leon (81) has expressed her disapproval of the new system of admission fees implemented in Venice, aimed at controlling the number of tourists. Leon believes that the five euro fee will not be effective in reducing tourism, as the authorities are more focused on generating revenue from visitors.

Having spent 30 years living in Venice and creating her successful series featuring Commissioner Brunetti, Leon understands the challenges of overtourism. She recently released the latest volume in her series titled “Trial by Fire.”

In 2007, Leon moved to Switzerland to escape the overwhelming tourist influx in Venice. She believes that reducing the number of tourists is an impossible task and that imposing higher fees would be unfair, as everyone should have access to the beauty of a place like Venice.

Leon is concerned that if left unchecked, tourism could destroy the very beauty that attracts visitors to the city. On a different note, she has also expressed concern about pollution and environmental degradation caused by tourism activities in Venice.
