The silver economy presents a significant employment opportunity for Italy, as highlighted by Gabriele Fava, president of INPS. Domestic work plays a crucial role in the socioeconomic structure and will need to be reevaluated to accommodate the demographic shift of an aging population. With an increase in citizens over 65 predicted by 2050, it is essential to adapt the current social security, insurance, and healthcare welfare systems to meet the needs of this new generation.

In 2023, there were 833,874 domestic workers contributing to INPS, a decrease of 7.6% compared to the previous year. Half of these workers were carers, underscoring the diverse nature of domestic work in Italy. While caregiving is the majority of domestic work, the composition of workers has shifted over time. Italian and foreign workers from different regions play a crucial role in this sector. Interestingly, there has been a decrease in male domestic workers in recent years, with females comprising the majority. Additionally, there is a strong reliance on foreign workers who make up the majority of the workforce in this sector.

The geographical distribution of domestic workers reveals their diverse origins and highlights how important it is for companies to understand their workforce’s cultural differences when managing them effectively. Domestic work is essential for Italy’s future economic growth and stability, and adapting to changing demographics and workforce dynamics will ensure its sustainability for years to come.

Overall, Fava emphasizes that domestic work plays a critical role in Italy’s socioeconomic structure and must be adapted accordingly to meet changing needs while still providing quality care for those who need it most. By recognizing its importance and taking action now, we can create a robust future for this vital industry that benefits both individuals and society as a whole.
