Six exceptional young men and women from App State have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse magazine for the 2023-24 academic year. These honorees include Chad Bellis (wrestling), Alexia Grant (women’s basketball), Nicholas Grizales (wrestling), Cierra Huntley (volleyball), Niejel Wilkins (men’s track & field) and Maya Winterhoff (volleyball).

The Diverse: Issues In Higher Education edition recognizes outstanding student-athletes of color who have excelled in both their academic and athletic pursuits. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students who maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, are at least sophomores academically, and have been actively involved on their campuses or in their communities.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these student-athletes, who have balanced the demands of both academics and sports. Being named as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars is a prestigious honor that highlights the achievements of these outstanding individuals.
