Firefighters across the country are set to receive a new piece of cutting-edge technology that will help them navigate through dark smoke during emergencies. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the availability of C-THRU, a helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device developed in collaboration with Qwake Technologies.
Through a 2020 contract, Qwake Technologies worked with DHS to develop the C-THRU device, which is designed to enhance the safety and effectiveness of firefighters. Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of providing improved equipment and technology to first responders to help save lives and protect firefighters. The Department is committed to supporting the development of devices like C-THRU that address the challenges faced by first responders.
The DHS Science and Technology Directorate is now accepting applications from fire departments interested in utilizing this innovative tool. Fire departments can apply for one of 400 prototype C-THRU devices, which are hands-free, lightweight, and equipped with a high-speed thermal camera. This camera captures the surrounding environment and provides real-time visibility through smoke and other obstacles. Additionally, C-THRU offers navigation features that help firefighters reorient themselves in challenging situations, providing turn-by-turn guidance and assistance in backtracking.
In the event that a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building, C-THRU includes a mayday function that can be activated to alert nearby users wearing the device. This feature helps distressed first responders get assistance quickly and efficiently. The system will also receive continuous improvements through over-the-air software updates, ensuring that it remains a valuable tool for firefighters on the front lines of emergency response situations.
