The Miami Marlins have decided to part ways with shortstop Tim Anderson, after he was designated for assignment following a disappointing first half of the season. Anderson, 31, struggled with a .214 batting average and made nine errors at shortstop in 65 games with the team. Despite signing a one-year, $5 million deal in February to try and rebuild his value, Anderson’s performance did not improve.

Anderson was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2013 and had a successful career, earning two All-Star appearances and winning a Silver Slugger award. However, his performance in the 2023 season did not live up to his previous marks, leading the White Sox to decline his option. After joining the Marlins, Anderson’s struggles continued until he got injured early in the season when he sprained his MCL which affected his body mechanics particularly when swinging which impacted his performance at the plate. He admitted having difficulty finding comfort at the plate after the injury.

Looking ahead, Anderson will need to make significant changes to his game in order to have a chance at returning to professional baseball. Without improvement, his career could be in jeopardy.
