New play equipment is being installed at the Bark River Sports Complex Park thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the Delta Menominee County Heart of the North Lions Club. Jane Lanaville, a charter member of the club, emphasized that the inclusive playground will improve accessibility for all children, including those with disabilities.
The Heart of the North Lions Club has been fundraising for this project for the past two years, raising over $130,000 with support from various organizations and donations. The new equipment includes features like a wheelchair-accessible whirl, an inclusive swing with secure belts, and spongy turf flooring for safety.
In addition to improvements at the sports complex park, the club has also made changes to the downtown park in Bark River. They have replaced the fence, enhanced parking safety, and updated some older play pieces. The club is currently working towards a matching grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to install new equipment at the downtown park.
The total cost of both projects is expected to exceed $150,000, with the aim of providing children with safe and enjoyable play areas. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for July 4 to unveil the new play area at the sports complex park.
