In Israel, the Ministry of Health has reported 81 cases of West Nile fever this season. Out of those diagnosed, 64 patients have been hospitalized, with six requiring ventilators. Unfortunately, seven patients have died from the disease. The majority of cases have been concentrated in central Israel.
West Nile fever is caused by a virus transmitted through mosquito bites and is not spread from person to person. About 80% of those infected show no symptoms, while 20% experience varying degrees of illness such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, and general malaise. Less than 1% of those infected will experience neurological complications, with the elderly and immunocompromised individuals at higher risk.
The Ministry of Health has published detailed information on West Nile fever, including translations in Russian, and has issued guidelines to reduce the risk of infection. Recommendations include cleaning public sewers, eliminating stagnant water sources, using insect repellents, covering exposed skin with clothing, and installing screens on windows and doors.
