The Denver Broncos have made a significant addition to their front office, with general manager George Paton appointing former Stanford head coach David Shaw as a senior personnel executive. This move marks Shaw’s return to the NFL after a hiatus since 2005.

During his 12-year tenure at Stanford, Shaw compiled a 96-54 record and won the Pac 12 Championship three times. He was also recognized as the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 2017. Shaw resigned from Stanford in November 2022, leaving as the program’s winningest head coach with 25 more victories than Pop Warner.

In his earlier career, Shaw held coaching positions with the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders in the late 1990s. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach with the Raiders in 2001 and later served as quarterbacks/wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens until 2005. Despite interviewing for head coaching positions with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers this offseason, Shaw found himself taking on a role in a front office with the Denver Broncos.

Shaw had previously interviewed for the Broncos’ head coaching position in 2023, but the team ultimately traded for Sean Payton. Payton and Shaw have known each other since their time as offensive assistants for the 1997 Philadelphia Eagles and have stayed in touch over the years. This move is expected to bring new perspectives to Broncos’ front office and provide valuable insights into player acquisition and development strategies.
